CCJ County Court Judgment moving abroad with debt
I’m moving abroad but owe money in the U.K.
In some cases people have emigrated to another country but have left debt behind in the U.K., and they think they will not be pursued for this debt. This is not the case.
Even if you move to another country, your creditors will still be able to pursue you for your outstanding debt. Your creditors will be able to enforce a county court judgment (CCJ) clearly confirming that the outstanding debts are owed. They will not be able to employ bailiffs to enforce a CCJ if you are not in the country, but they are able to employ local debt collecting agencies to pursue their debt, even though you are residing overseas.
You can be pursued for any outstanding debts for up to six years, in accordance with the limitations act 1980, so please don’t think that by moving to another country this will solve all your financial difficulties.
